Girona City Council and the University of Girona launch a survey on discrimination in the city

The study will be carried out through telephone calls to a representative sample of residents and aims to provide data to improve municipal policies.

Girona City Council, together with the Research Group in Applied Social Sciences at the University of Girona (UdG), has launched a study on situations of unequal treatment or discrimination that residents of the city may experience. The initiative will be conducted through telephone surveys addressed to a representative sample of citizens, with the aim of obtaining rigorous and up-to-date information to guide municipal policies on social cohesion, coexistence and equal treatment, and to improve public services.

This study forms part of the Commit to Rights project, which has been developed in the city of Girona since 2024 with funding from the European Union, specifically from the European Commission in the field of Fundamental Rights and Citizenship.

The telephone survey will last approximately 10 minutes and will be conducted with a significant and representative sample of Girona’s population during the months of February and March. The calls are made by interviewers from a specialised company working on behalf of Girona City Council. Selected individuals will receive a call in which the interviewer will identify themselves as such and explain the purpose of the survey. Responses are completely anonymous and confidential: no name, ID number or bank details will be requested; the call will not be recorded, and all information collected will be used exclusively for statistical purposes.

The Councillor for Equality and Social Justice and for Cooperation of the City Council, Amy Sabaly i Balde, stressed that “collecting the experiences of citizens is key to obtaining a faithful picture of the reality of Girona with regard to possible discrimination that may occur in everyday life.” She added that “this study should help us detect situations that are invisible and design public policies that are better aligned with the real needs of citizens.”

Girona City Council calls for public cooperation and asks all individuals who receive the call to answer the survey sincerely. Participation is voluntary but essential in order to obtain a solid and independent diagnosis of the municipality’s situation in terms of equal treatment and discrimination.

People who have any questions or require further information can consult the municipal website of Girona City Council at https://web.girona.cat/nodiscriminacio or send an email to nodiscriminacio@ajgirona.cat.
